Behold Our God

Dec 2, 2016

Last month I wrote on the greatness of God and focused on Isaiah Chapter 40.  In the providence of God this past Sunday while our family was getting ready for church the song Behold our God (www.SovereignGraceMusic.org) came up on my wife’s playlist.  It had been a while since I heard it but the words caught my attention and recalled to mind the words of Isaiah we considered last month.  The lyrics to the song are below. I would encourage you to read them as well as listen to the song.

Verse 1
Who has held the oceans in His hands?
Who has numbered every grain of sand?
Kings and nations tremble at His voice
All creation rises to rejoice

Chorus
Behold our God seated on His throne
Come, let us adore Him
Behold our King—nothing can compare
Come, let us adore Him

Verse 2
Who has given counsel to the Lord?
Who can question any of His words?
Who can teach the One who knows all things?
Who can fathom all His wondrous deeds?

Chorus
Behold our God seated on His throne
Come, let us adore Him
Behold our King—nothing can compare
Come, let us adore Him

Verse 3
Who has felt the nails upon His hands?
Bearing all the guilt of sinful man
God eternal, humbled to the grave
Jesus, Savior, risen now to reign

Men: You will reign forever

Chorus
Behold our God, Seated on His throne
Come, let us adore Him
Behold our King—nothing can compare
Come, let us adore Him

Indeed, who has held the oceans in His hands or numbered every grain of sand?  Who can do that? No one but God!  Have you ever tried to number grains of sand?  It is almost impossible to even get them separated much less count them.  Yet we are told that God has numbered every single grain of sand.

We are also told that he holds the oceans His hands.  We considered this truth in last month’s article but it is worth repeating.  Isaiah 40:12 asks, “Who has measured the waters in the hallow of his hand…?” Who has done that?  Who can do that?  God alone can do that is the answer.  Only he can tell the oceans you may come this far but no farther.

Kings and nations tremble at his voice.  Isn’t that amazing? They tremble at his voice!  He speaks and the powerful tremble. Those whom people would fear tremble when God speaks.

Who has given counsel to the Lord? Who can question His words?  Who can teach him? Who can fathom all His wondrous deeds?  NO ONE!  Which one of his creatures is wise enough to counsel him? Which one can question what he has said?  Who of us is going to teach him or tell him something he doesn’t know? Who has the capacity to fathom all that God has done and understand it? NO ONE!

Who is it that has felt the nails upon His hands? Jesus Christ alone.
Who is it that has born the guilt of sinful man? Jesus Christ alone.
Who is God eternal humbled to the grave?  Jesus Christ alone.
Who is the Savior risen now to reign? Jesus Christ alone.

So, friends, as the chorus states,

Behold our God seated on His throne
Come, let us adore Him
Behold our King nothing can compare
Come, let us adore Him!

For, he indeed will reign forever and may HIS glory fill the earth!

By His Grace Alone,

Josh
